João Pedro Monteiro, known to the world of table tennis as "Monti" had the first contact with the sport in 1993 on holiday in Switzerland in te company of his cousins who had a table to play.

In October of that year, Professor Filipe Amaral, who would become jis first coach, was conducting a battery of physical tests for Primary School of Tercena having seen the "Monti" a lot of potencial.
